Journal : Why We Should Go Home On Time

Mr. Narayana Murthy is undoubtedly one of the most famous persons from Karnataka. He is known not just for building the biggest IT Empire in India but also for his simplicity. Almost every important dignitary visits InfoSys campus. He delivered an interesting speech during an employee session with another IT company in India . He is incidentally, one of the top 50 influential people of Asia according to an Asiaweek publication and also the new IT Advisor to the Thailand Prime Minister.

Extract of Mr. Narayana Murthy's Speech during Mentor Session:

I know people who work 12 hours a day, six days a week, or more. Some people do so because of a work emergency where the long hours are only temporary. Other people I know have put in these hours for years. I do not know if they are working all these hours, but I do know they are in the office this long. Others put in long office hours because they are addicted to the workplace.

Whatever the reason for putting in overtime, working long hours over the long term is harmful to the person and to the organization. There are things managers can do to change this for everyone's benefit. Being in the office long hours, over long periods of time, makes way for potential errors.

My colleagues who are in the office long hours frequently make mistakes caused by fatigue. Correcting these mistakes requires their time as well as the time and energy of others. I have seen people work Tuesday through Friday to correct mistakes made after 5 PM on Monday.

Another problem is that people who are in the office long hours are not pleasant company. They often complain about other people (who are not working as hard); they are irritable, or cranky, or even angry. Other people avoid them. Such behaviour poses problems, where work goes much better when people work together instead of avoiding one another.

As Managers, there are things we can do to help people leave the office. First and foremost is to set the example and go home ourselves. I work with a manager who chides people for working long hours. His words quickly lose their meaning when he sends these chiding group e-mails with a time-stamp of 2 AM, Sunday.

Second is to encourage people to put some balance in their lives. For instance, here is a guideline I find helpful:


1. Wake up, eat a good breakfast, and go to work.

2. Work hard and smart for eight or nine hours.

3. Go home.

4. Read the books/comics, watch a funny movie, dig in the dirt, play with your kids, etc.

5. Eat well and sleep well.

This is called recreating. Doing steps 1, 3, 4, and 5 enable step 2. Working regular hours and recreating daily are simple concepts. They are hard for some of us because that requires 'personal change'. They are possible since we all have the power to choose to do them.

In considering the issue of overtime, I am reminded of my oldest son. When he was a toddler, if people were visiting the apartment, he would not fall asleep no matter how long the visit was, and no matter what time of day it was. He would fight off sleep until the visitors left. It was as if he was afraid that he would miss some thing. Once our visitors' left, he would go to sleep. By this time, however, he was over tired and would scream through half the night with nightmares. He, my wife, and I, all paid the price for his fear of missing out.

Perhaps some people put in such long hours because they do not want to miss anything when they leave the office. The trouble with this is that events will never stop happening. That is life! Things happen 24 hours a day. Allowing for little rest is not ultimately practical. So, take a nap. Things will happen while you are asleep, but you will have the energy to catch up when you wake.

dah memang terlambat nak tempah baju for raya this year, the usual tailor i place my baju for tempahan pun dah tak nak terima lagi..*sob*sob* i am kinda last minute person when it comes to tempah baju..

wats in my mind now is to just buy off the rack kat mana2 butik.. kalo ada yg mengikut taste & harga bersesuaian.

sebab memang dah confirmmmmm kak zah tk nak amik tempahan.. sedih..
for this year, i m thinking of having red as our family theme color.. rasa2 merah tu mak ngah tapi tak pe..kita cuba..

for baju melayu traditional the usual tailor is still taking order, my husband usual tailor place is in Bangsar called "Wai Man Tailor" - highly recommended

teruja tengok muka ryder in this film..sangat crook look yet hensome :-) tengok walter garber ..sangat cool and very the fatherly style..

PAGI YANG GELAP...KINI SUDAH TERANG..DAH HARI SABTUUU

hari sabtu yg indah nih sebenarnya aku plan pagi2 nak pergi JALAN TAR, nak pegi KAMDAR & GULATIS.. tak da makna nya..bangun pagi tapi tertidur kat sofa sampai kul 12.00 tengahari..

JUMAAT YANG HEPI..dapat jumpa mak..

went back to mak's place on friday nite, punya la lama tak jumpa mak sendiri..ye lah tiap kali peg umah mak, mesti mak tak da.. mak pegi meeting PAS la..mak pegi rombongan kak kiah ke kelantan lah langkawi la..jalan sakan.. kira jumaat ni dah set appointment nak jumpa mak..hehe..balik keje terus redah bangsar...masuk jln kelang lama...masuk jln puchong..memang commit suicide masuk jln puchong waktu habis office hour petang jumaat..jem gila dari batu 6 puchong sampai ke kinrara... tension aku.. sempat aku jeling keta kat sebelah..suma muka tension...

nasib little boy buat aku happy sepanjang jem..bercakap je tak henti..tanya tu tanya ni..ni mcm jalan nak gi umah opah je.. bila nak sampai umah opah ni ma... jauh lagi ke ma.. byk soalan betul..tapi menghiburkan...

masa jem sempat aku jeling umah lama ..our family stays in Jalan Puchong batu 6 sebelum beli umah kat kinrara court..umah sewa jek.. tak byk ubah.. masih ada umah yg aku duduk 20an tahun yg lalu..mesti masih rumah sewa.. tuan umah nama dia Haji Harun..sangat femes kat kawasan tu..pastu owner lagi satu nama dia khamis..atau panggilan cek' me.. nampak dah lain sikit umah sewa cek' me -- walaupun banyak kenangan pahit manis aku tak penah singgah pun sejak pindah dari situ.. cuma bila pass by jalan tu aku mesti toleh tengok.. umah lama..

sampai umah mak...mak tak da pun..



so aku bawa littleboy main kat play ground situ.. dulu aku yg main2 & lepak2 kat taman tuh..

dari jauh nampak mcm kelibat mak je... memang mak pun...dari jauh dah lambai-lambai///terubat rindu bila dah jumpa mak.. lepas borak borak citer citer ye lah dah lama tak jumpa..macam jumpa member lama la.. byk yg nak diupdatekan..hehe

lepas magrib aku dah janji ngan adik ku nak jenguk rumah dia..

adik lelaki aku sekarang dah duduk menyewa kat bandar puchong ..ye la nak berdikari..aku sokong dia pindah pun..supaya dia rasa hidup berkeluarga & rasa tanggungjawap.. sejak dia dah berkerja & mula hidup baru aku bersyukur dia banyak berubah..Alhamdulillah..mungkin berkat doa & juga hasil2 umpatan hinaan orang..pahala tu dapat pd dia..

bangga gak aku gi umah adik aku, rumah dia simple & menarik..bersih & kemas..pandai jugak adik ipar aku jaga umah tangga dia. siap cat umah sewa tu lagi//color pun cantik choc cair, barang electric hasil sumbangan mak & mak mertua, ada yg dibeli sendiri...lengkap gak la umah dia...adik ipar aku sekarang menumpu perhatian menjaga anak & rumahtangga..tengahari tunggu adik ku balik untuk makan tengahari..dia tk makan kat kedai.. aku kagum gak ..jimat cermat..yelah yg keje sorang..gaji tak seberapa plak tuh... kita yg keje suami isteri duduk umah sendiri..pun kadang2 "sesak" gakkk.. nih kan dia.. apa2 pun aku bersyukur alhamdulillah dia ok..

balik dari puchong pun dah lambat little boy masih pokpekpok pek sepanjang jalan balik ke Pandan Utama.. hehe.. apa-apa pun.. aku seronok dengar suara little boy yang nyaring serak basah tu bila bercakap...kadang cakap bende yg tak masuk akal pun ada... dua beranak dlm keta...

ok selamat malam jumaat...
